The COMBOOST project aims to overcome barriers to plastic packaging recycling by focusing on composting and offering innovative solutions to eliminate microplastics from compost. By enhancing the composting process with specific microorganisms, the degradation of bioplastics is accelerated, curbing their entry into natural and agricultural environments and preventing their potential inclusion in the food chain. This approach not only ensures faster plastic degradation but also minimizes waste disposal, yielding both economic and environmental benefits. Furthermore, the resulting high-quality compost undergoes rigorous safety assessments, guaranteeing its suitability for soil regeneration without associated toxicity or contamination issues in agricultural or gardening applications. This project is funded by GVA-AVI and the European Union through the ERDF.
